Weeds on an acreage: what the counties expect
Alberta's Weed Control Act puts the job on whoever owns or occupies the land: noxious weeds must be controlled, and prohibited noxious weeds must be destroyed. The province keeps the list of regulated weeds.
Foothills County. The county's Agricultural Service Board enforces the Act on county and private land. Its weed inspectors can enter land at a reasonable time, and if they find regulated weeds you'll get a Weed Notice with control measures and a deadline. The county's "Weed Wednesday" bulletins have featured local problem weeds such as yellow clematis, common tansy, spotted knapweed, scentless chamomile and oxeye daisy. For help identifying or controlling a weed, call the Agricultural Fieldman at 403-603-5423.
Rocky View County. Inspectors are out every growing season, and if they find regulated weeds you'll get a letter and report. The county sprays roadsides on a three-year rotation; if you don't want herbicide along your frontage, you can sign an opt-out agreement, but then weed control in that ditch is your job. The county also rents out a pasture sprayer and backpack sprayers. Agricultural Services: 403-230-1401. Its tip: avoid wildflower seed mixes that don't list Latin names, because many contain invasive species.
Hiring a sprayer. Anyone offering a pesticide service in Alberta needs a Pesticide Applicator Certificate in the right class, so ask for it. Ask which products they'll use near livestock, pets, gardens and your well, and about re-entry times. Acreage owners can use a few specified commercial products on their own land, and some municipalities take part in a rural acreage owner certification program run through their Agricultural Fieldman.
Can I just mow the weeds?
Mowing, hand-pulling and cultivating can control noxious weeds, but they need follow-up through the season, and prohibited noxious weeds must be destroyed. Bag seed heads so they don't spread.
