Mobile welding and repair on an acreage: what to ask

Gates, corrals, trailers, hitches, implements and small engines don't always fit in the truck, so mobile welders and repair techs come to the yard. In Foothills and Rocky View, that often means working in a field, a barn or a shop with livestock nearby. A little planning makes the visit safer and faster.

Fire risk. Welding and grinding throw sparks. Before hot work outside, clear dry grass and brush from around the job, keep water or an extinguisher on hand, and hold off on outdoor hot work during a fire advisory or ban. Both counties post fire bans and advisories on their websites, so check before work in dry weather.

Getting ready. Tell them what's broken and what it's made of, send photos, and say whether the truck can drive right up to it. Move livestock and pets away from the work area, and point out overhead power lines and anything buried if they'll be digging or setting posts. Any digging needs a utility locate first.

Credentials. Ask what certificates the welder or technician holds, such as a journeyperson Welder or Heavy Equipment Technician certificate, and check it with Alberta's Tradesperson Lookup Tool. For structural or pressure work, ask whether the job needs an engineer or a certified procedure.

Cost and paperwork. Ask about call-out fees and travel charges for rural sites, the hourly rate, and whether materials are extra. Ask for proof of liability insurance and a WCB Alberta clearance letter before work starts, and a written invoice listing the work and materials.

For engines, hydraulics and transmissions on tractors, loaders and trucks, a mobile heavy-duty or farm mechanic may be the better call.
