Clearing brush around Calgary: burn permits and FireSmart

Burning in Rocky View County. Open burning of things like cleared trees, old fences or brush needs a fire permit, all year. The permit is free, but it's suspended during fire bans and advisories. Once it's issued, you get a 5-day weather window. A Fire Guardian from your local station contacts you to go over the conditions and may inspect the site, which can take up to 72 hours. Wind must be under 12 km/h, there's no burning after dark without special permission, and you must notify Fire Dispatch 30 minutes before you start. Burning without a permit can bring a $1,000 fine.

Burning in Foothills County. A burn permit is required for all outdoor burning under the county's fire bylaw. Apply online or at the Heritage Pointe Fire Station. You can burn wood, wood by-products or leaves, must keep a way to put the fire out on hand, and must call 1-888-808-3722 at least an hour before you light.

FireSmart around buildings. FireSmart Alberta's home guide recommends clearing the first 1.5 m around the house of anything that burns, keeping firewood 10 to 30 m away rather than stacked against buildings, and keeping grass near buildings short (under 10 cm burns less intensely). Brush mulching and tree thinning near the house and outbuildings are exactly what clearing crews do.

What to ask a crew. Ask whether they'll mulch on site, haul debris away or pile it for burning (and who gets the burn permit). Ask about stumps, regrowth and weeds on newly cleared ground, and whether they need a utility locate before grinding stumps or digging. Ask for proof of insurance and a WCB clearance letter.

Can I burn during a fire advisory?

In Rocky View, permits are suspended during fire bans and advisories and can be resubmitted once they're lifted. In Foothills, check the county's fire status on its website before you burn.
