Septic pump-outs around Calgary: what to know

Most acreages around Calgary are on a private septic system. Rocky View County serves only a short list of communities with county wastewater, including Bragg Creek, Elbow Valley, Langdon and Balzac, and in Foothills County county sewer is limited to Cayley, Blackie, Priddis Greens and Hawk's Landing. Everywhere else, the tank and field are yours to look after.

How often. Alberta's Working Well fact sheet on private sewage systems says to pump the tank when sludge and scum reach 35 percent of its liquid depth. That's typically every one to three years, depending on how many people live in the house, your water habits and the tank's size. A certified contractor can measure the layers and suggest a schedule. The same sheet says septic additives aren't needed and don't reduce the need to pump.

When. The province recommends pumping in spring or summer, because the bacteria in the tank re-establish faster in warm weather and the job is easier for the hauler. If your tank is due and you've missed that window, our suggestion is to book before freeze-up, while lids are still easy to reach; ask your pump-out company what they recommend. Access. A vacuum truck needs a firm path close to the tank lid. Foothills County issues seasonal road bans that limit truck weights on some roads, so check your road before booking a spring pump-out. Keep vehicles and livestock off the field all year.

How do I find my tank?

If your system was installed recently, the certified contractor should have given you a map, design drawings and an owner's manual. For an older system, a contractor can locate the tank and sketch where it and the pipes are.

What are the warning signs?

Sewage smells in the house or yard, slow drains, gurgling pipes, soggy ground or black liquid over the field, and coliform bacteria, E. coli or nitrates showing up in your well water tests. Don't wait for them: regular pumping is the best prevention.
