Propane on an acreage around Calgary: permits and winter

Many acreages in Foothills and Rocky View heat with propane. In Alberta, propane installs follow the provincial gas codes. The CSA B149.1 Natural gas and propane installation code (2025 edition, in force since March 1, 2026) covers appliances, piping, and tank storage and placement. A new install, a moved tank or a new appliance needs a gas permit and a certified gasfitter, so ask your installer who pulls the permit and books the inspection.

Delivery. Ask suppliers whether they offer automatic (scheduled) delivery or will-call, how they decide when to come, and what happens if a storm closes your road. Ask about minimum delivery amounts and whether your tank is owned or rented, and read the rental terms before you sign.

Winter. The Canadian Propane Association's winter tips are worth following on any acreage. Fill the tank early, before cold snaps and bad roads. Mark the tank and regulator with a flag or stake taller than the usual snow, and keep the driveway and the path to the tank plowed. Clear snow and ice gently by hand or with a broom: no shovels, kicking or snowblowers near the valves and piping. Keep furnace, water heater and HRV vents clear of snow, because blocked vents can let carbon monoxide build up.

Safety. Have CO alarms on every level and near bedrooms, and test them monthly. If you smell gas, leave the building and call your supplier's emergency line from outside.

New shop or addition? A propane line to a shop heater is gas work, and so is a new appliance. Rocky View County notes that gas permits may be needed even when a project doesn't need a building permit, and Foothills County's permit page says gas work needs a gasfitter to pull the permit.

Can I move my own propane tank?

No: moving or altering a propane system is gas work that needs a permit and a certified gasfitter. Call your supplier.
