Testing well water around Calgary: AHS drop-offs and what to expect

Alberta Health Services Environmental Public Health tests water from private drinking-water supplies such as wells. AHS recommends a bacteria test (total coliform and E. coli) twice a year and a chemical and trace metals test every 3 years. It won't test samples taken for real estate, business, farming or research reasons: those go to a commercial lab, at your cost.

Where to get a bottle. Near the acreage areas around Calgary, AHS lists water-sample pick-up and drop-off at Okotoks Health and Wellness Centre (11 Cimarron Common), Cochrane Community Health Centre (60 Grande Boulevard), High River Public Health Centre and Airdrie Community Health Centre. Drop-off days and cut-off times vary by centre and can change around holidays, so check the AHS listing or call the centre before you take your sample.

Taking the sample. Use only the AHS bottle and follow its instructions. Collect bacteria samples on the day you drop them off, keep them cold, and get them in fast: the lab won't test a bacteria sample more than 24 hours old. Take chemistry samples before any treatment equipment (softener, iron filter, reverse osmosis) and bacteria samples after it.

Results. Bacteria results take 2 to 3 days. A public health inspector calls only if the sample is unsafe or wasn't processed, so no call within 4 days means no coliforms or E. coli were found. Chemistry results take 6 to 8 weeks and arrive by mail.

Cost. Ask AHS or the health centre whether there's a fee when you pick up a bottle.

If your results show hardness, iron or bacteria, a treatment dealer can explain the options, such as a softener, an iron filter, UV disinfection or reverse osmosis. Ask them to walk you through your lab results before recommending equipment.

What if I think my water isn't safe?

AHS says don't drink it until testing shows it's safe. Use bottled water, and contact AHS Environmental Public Health.
