Cisterns and water hauling around Calgary

Many acreages in Foothills and Rocky View store hauled water in a cistern. Alberta's public health guidelines for non-municipal drinking water say a cistern should be filled by an AHS-approved water hauler. AHS inspects the truck and its operating procedures, then issues a decal that's displayed on every approved vehicle, so look for it.

What approval means. An approved tank can only ever be used for potable water, must be made of food-grade material, and should be labelled "Potable Water Only" or "For Drinking Water Use Only", hoses included. The water itself has to come from a source regulated as potable. Hauling anything else in the tank voids the approval.

Looking after the cistern. The guidelines suggest filling the cistern at least once a month, or often enough to keep a chlorine residual, so the water doesn't go stale. Label the fill hatch "Potable Water Only". Clean and disinfect the cistern every year, before first use, after any repairs inside the tank and whenever contamination is suspected. The inside of a cistern can be low in oxygen, so leave internal cleaning to someone trained for confined spaces.

Sizing. For a new or replacement cistern, the guidelines suggest a tank that holds at least 3 times your expected daily use, and never less than a day's supply.

Filling it yourself. Foothills County runs bulk water fill stations at Aldersyde, Blackie and West Foothills, open 24 hours a day and priced per cubic metre. County residents and licensed businesses can set up an account.

Winter. Keep a plowed, firm path to the fill point, keep the hatch marked and clear of snow, and book deliveries ahead of storms.

Can I store well water in my cistern?

The guidelines treat groundwater as non-potable, but it can be stored in a cistern if it's treated before you drink it, cook with it or wash with it. A cistern that held non-potable water can't be switched to hauled drinking water.
