Fencing an acreage around Calgary: locates, lines and drifts
Locate before you pound. Driving posts is ground disturbance, and buried power, gas, phone and internet lines run under fields, farms and yards across Alberta. Request a locate through Utility Safety Partners (ClickBeforeYouDig.com) before the first post goes in. The service is free. In busy periods they warn that responses can take 5 to 10 business days, so book it when you book the crew. A good fencer will ask whether you've done it.
Along the road. The ditch and road allowance belong to the county, not to you, so check where your property line is before fencing along a county road. Rocky View County publishes a Residential Approaches & County Right-of-Way information sheet on its Driveways and Approaches page.
Snow and drifting. A solid fence or windbreak near the driveway can pile snow right where you don't want it, so think about prevailing winds when you plan the line. Rocky View County notes it may enter private property to install and maintain snow fencing along county roads, under the provincial Public Highways Development Act.
Choosing a fence. Page (woven) wire suits sheep, goats and dogs; barbed wire is common for cattle; and rail, board, mesh or electric tape are popular for horses because horses can be hurt on barbed wire. Ask the fencer about post spacing, bracing at corners and gates, and how the fence will handle frost heave.
Hiring. Get the line length, post type and spacing, wire type, gates and cleanup in writing. Ask for proof of liability insurance and a WCB Alberta clearance letter before work starts: if a contractor hasn't paid their WCB premiums, you may be liable for them.
Who pays for a fence on a shared property line?
That's between neighbours, so agree on it in writing before anyone orders materials. Your county can confirm where the property line and road allowance are.
