Equipment and tool rental around Calgary

Plenty of acreage jobs only need a machine for a weekend: a skid steer to spread gravel, a mini excavator for a trench, a post pounder for a fence line or a dump trailer for a cleanup. Rental yards around Calgary rent by the day, week or month, and many will deliver.

Guide

Before you rent a machine for your acreage

Renting can save thousands over buying a machine you'll use a few times a year, as long as you get the right size and plan the job. Here's a plain-language checklist.

  1. Pick the right machine for the job
  2. Getting it home: towing or delivery
  3. Dig safely
  4. Cost, damage and paperwork

Pick the right machine for the job

  • Tell the rental yard what the job is (grading a driveway, digging a trench, setting fence posts, moving snow), how big the area is, and what the ground is like. They can match the machine and attachments to it.
  • Measure your gates, doors and any tight spots. A compact or mini skid steer fits where a full-size machine won't.
  • Ask for a walk-around and a short demo of the controls and attachments before you take it, and read the operator's manual.

Getting it home: towing or delivery

  • Check your vehicle's towing capacity and hitch rating against the combined weight of the trailer and the machine, and make sure the trailer's lights and brakes work.
  • If you're not sure, book delivery. Many yards deliver to acreages for a fee, and some set the machine right where you need it.
  • Spring road bans can limit heavy loads on some county roads. Ask the yard, or check your county's road ban notices, before a big delivery.

Dig safely

  • Before you dig, trench, auger or pound posts, request a free locate so buried power, gas, phone and pipeline lines are marked. Utility Safety Partners: Click Before You Dig
  • Look up before you raise a loader bucket, boom or dump box near overhead power lines, and keep well back from them.
  • Keep children, pets and livestock away from the work area while the machine is running.

Cost, damage and paperwork

  • Ask how you're charged: daily, weekend, weekly or monthly rates, any hour limits, fuel, cleaning and delivery fees, and the deposit.
  • Ask what the damage waiver covers and what it doesn't, and check with your own insurer before you rent.
  • Take photos of the machine when you pick it up and when you return it, and note any existing damage on the rental contract.
