Water wells around Calgary: approvals, records and care

Outside the few areas on county water, most acreages in Foothills and Rocky View rely on a private well. In Alberta, drilling contractors must hold a current Water Act Approval to Drill Water Wells. Approvals are valid for one year, and different classes of approval cover different kinds of drilling.

Drilling reports. Contractors must submit a drilling report for every well they drill, and the data goes into the Alberta Water Well Information Database. That's useful when you buy an acreage: you can often look up the well's record (depth, construction and the driller) before you call anyone. Ask your driller for a copy of the report for a new well, too.

Look after the wellhead. The province requires a well to have a well cap or cover and to stay accessible for cleaning, repair and inspection. Keep the cap tight and the vents clear, keep surface water from pooling around the casing, and stake the wellhead before winter so plows and mowers miss it.

After any work, test. A new well, a new pump or flooding can all let bacteria in. Alberta Health Services recommends testing private well water for bacteria twice a year, and after events like these. Your well's ID and depth go on the AHS requisition form, so note them from the database or the drilling report.

Alberta's Working Well program publishes plain-language fact sheets on well construction, shock chlorination and water testing, and is a good place to start before calling a driller or pump technician.

Where do I find my well ID and depth?

Search the Alberta Water Well Information Database, ask the previous owner or your realtor, or contact the province's Groundwater Information Centre at gwinfo@gov.ab.ca or 780-427-2770.

What should I ask a driller?

Which approval they hold, whether a journeyperson driller will run the rig, what the quote includes (casing, screen, pump, pressure system), and whether they carry WCB coverage and insurance.
