Rural Electrical around Edmonton
Electrical work on an acreage covers more ground than in town. Power often runs a long way underground to a shop, barn or well, outbuildings need their own sub-panels, and the well pump, stock waterers and heat trace all depend on the same service. A rural electrician can plan the whole property, upgrade the service, and set up a safe hookup for backup power.

Guide
Before you call an electrician for your acreage
Long underground runs, several buildings, a well pump and the odd power outage: here's a plain-language checklist for planning, permitting and staying safe with electrical work on an acreage.
- Plan the power for the whole property
- Permits and certified electricians
- Wells, waterers and heat trace
- Backup power, done safely
- Dig and work safely
Plan the power for the whole property
- List everything you want to run now and later (house, shop, barn, well, heaters, welder, hot tub, EV charger), so the electrician can size the main service and each feeder for the full load.
- Long runs to a shop, barn or well need the right size of wire to avoid voltage drop, and each outbuilding usually gets its own sub-panel. Ask how the electrician sized them.
- A new or bigger service means working with your electricity distribution company. Talk to them and your electrician early. FortisAlberta: residential connections
Permits and certified electricians
- Alberta's Safety Codes Act requires contractors and homeowners to get permits before most electrical work, from your municipality or an accredited agency. Safety Codes Council: permit information and where to get a permit.
- Check an electrician's Alberta certificate with the province's lookup. Alberta tradesperson lookup tool. Alberta's electrical codes are listed here: Alberta: electrical codes and standards.
Wells, waterers and heat trace
- Your water depends on the well pump circuit. Label the well pump breaker, and ask your electrician to check the pump and pressure-system wiring when you have other work done.
- Stock waterers, heat trace and block heaters run all winter. Ask for circuits sized and protected for outdoor and wet locations.
Backup power, done safely
- A generator must never feed power back into the lines. FortisAlberta says an electrician must be involved in any standby generator set-up, connected with a CSA-approved utility transfer switch. FortisAlberta: standby generators
- Never run a portable generator indoors or in a garage, and keep a battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm in the home. FortisAlberta: safety, including home generator safety
- For standby generators, batteries and solar, see our Solar, Off-Grid & Backup Power section.
Dig and work safely
- Before you or your contractor trench for a new feeder or service, request a free locate so buried power, gas, phone and pipeline lines are marked. Utility Safety Partners: Click Before You Dig
- Look up before you raise a ladder, loader or boom near overhead lines, and keep well back from them.
