Strathcona County: rules and official contacts

  • A private sewage permit is needed for a holding tank, a septic tank with a field, mound or open discharge, a treatment plant, and to replace a septic or holding tank. Certified installers can apply for any system; homeowners who live on the property can apply for a soil-based system they install themselves, but the design needs professional involvement. Safety Codes Officers answer technical questions at 780-464-8080. Strathcona County: Private sewage
  • Tanks that connect to a county low-pressure main (STEP system) need a separate plumbing permit, and homeowners can't get that permit themselves. Strathcona County: Private sewage
  • Open fires, burn barrels, brush piles and yard debris fires in the rural area need a fire permit, valid for one year. You must be the landowner or have the landowner's written permission. Permits aren't issued in Sherwood Park, Ardrossan, Josephburg, North and South Cooking Lake, Antler Lake, Hastings Lake, Half Moon Lake or Collingwood Cove. Strathcona County: Fire permits
  • Before every burn, permit holders call or text "BURN" to the 24-hour Burning Status Line, 1-844-414-2876, to check that burning is allowed. Strathcona County: Burning household garbage (fire permit FAQ)
  • All rural roads are cleared within five days of a moderate (5-7 cm) snowfall. Country residential and hamlet roads are priority 4, after industrial roads, thoroughfares and grid roads; the province maintains the highways. The county's page covers roads, not private driveways. • AHS water sample bottles for private wells: find the nearest pick-up and drop-off location on the AHS listing, and check the centre's current drop-off days and times before you sample. AHS: Water sample bottle pick-up and drop-off locations
