Guide
Before you call a mobile mechanic
A good mobile mechanic can save you a tow and a lost week. A few minutes of preparation makes the visit faster and the bill smaller. Here's a plain-language checklist.
- Which kind of mechanic you need
- What to have ready when you call
- Getting the site ready
- Cost and paperwork
- Check the mechanic: certificates, insurance and WCB
- Prevent the next breakdown
Which kind of mechanic you need
- Heavy-duty mechanics (heavy equipment technicians) work on loaders, skid steers, excavators, backhoes, dozers and heavy trucks. In Alberta, Heavy Equipment Technician is a compulsory-certification trade. Tradesecrets: Heavy Equipment Technician
- Agricultural equipment technicians specialize in tractors, combines, balers, swathers and other farm machinery. It's an optional-certification trade in Alberta, with a journeyperson certificate and Red Seal available. Tradesecrets: Agricultural Equipment Technician
- Small equipment and outdoor power technicians handle compact tractors, ride-on mowers, UTVs, snow blowers and small engines, often at your house.
- Many truck and trailer shops also send out a mobile service truck. Ask what they work on before they drive out.
What to have ready when you call
- Make, model, year, serial number and engine hours of the machine.
- What happened and when: noises, smoke, leaks, warning lights or fault codes. Photos or a short video help a lot.
- What you've already checked or replaced, and when it was last serviced.
- Where the machine is, and whether a service truck can drive right up to it.
Getting the site ready
- Clear a level, firm spot for the service truck next to the machine. If it's in a field or a muddy yard, say so when you book.
- Keep children, pets and livestock away from the work area, and tell the mechanic about any overhead power lines nearby.
- If the repair needs digging (a buried fuel line or a stuck machine), request a locate before anyone digs. Utility Safety Partners: Click Before You Dig
Cost and paperwork
- Mobile work is usually billed as an hourly rate plus travel (per km or a flat call-out), and after-hours or weekend calls cost more. Ask for the rates, and a rough estimate, up front.
- Ask whether parts are extra, whether they stock common filters and hoses on the truck, and what happens if a part has to be ordered.
- Ask for a written invoice that lists the work done and the parts used. It helps with warranty claims and resale.
- Ask what happens to drained oil, coolant and filters. Used oil, filters and containers can be recycled at depots across Alberta. Alberta Recycling: used oil materials
Check the mechanic: certificates, insurance and WCB
- Ask what certificates the technician holds. You can confirm an Alberta journeyperson certificate, Red Seal or apprentice status with the province's lookup tool. Tradesecrets: Tradesperson Lookup Tool
- Ask for proof of liability insurance, especially for work on expensive equipment or in your shop.
- Get a WCB Alberta clearance letter before you hire. If a contractor hasn't paid their WCB premiums, you may be liable for them. WCB Alberta: clearance letters
Prevent the next breakdown
- Book servicing before the busy season: before haying and harvest for farm equipment, and before the first snow for anything that plows or blows snow.
- Buying used equipment? A pre-purchase inspection from a mobile mechanic can catch hidden problems before you pay.
- Keep a simple log of hours, services and repairs for each machine.
